Book Introduction
The second edition of A Fashion-Lover’s Guide to the Best Shopping in Denver and Beyond reflects the changing fashion retail scene. Foley’s left and Macy’s arrived. Denver finally got a Nordstrom at the Cherry Creek Shopping Center. Successful boutiques have opened branches and others have expanded their selling space, all good news for Denver fashionistas. Since the first edition was published, almost twice as many new boutiques have opened than have closed. That’s a very positive sign for our retail community. Here are some other trends we have identified:Marketing: Independent commercial neighbor- hoods are banding together and pooling their mar- keting resources to increase their visibility. One of the best examples is the Original Shopping District, a partnership of five historic districts: Old South Gaylord, Downtown Littleton, Old South Pearl Street, Olde Town Arvada and Historic Downtown Golden. These areas are attracting more shoppers with their great sidewalk sales and ladies-only sample tours.Use of the Internet: Many more stores have websites and emails, making it much more convenient to learn about special promotions. Several boutiques now sell merchandise online.Size shrinkage: Even though the American woman is getting larger, many boutiques have cut back on larger sizes. That doesn’t make much sense to us.Business opportunity: Even though Douglas County is one of the fastest growing counties in the nation, it has no locally-owned boutiques for women. What gives? A great opportunity awaits an intrepid boutique owner.More sales: In the previous book, most boutique owners had set schedules for sales. In the past few years, sales have increased in frequency. Owners tell us they have sales “whenever they need to.”Varied backgrounds: Many boutique owners have come to the retail trade from disparate professions. Lisa Borden of Gloss, the new denim bar in Colo- rado Springs, grew up in a Mennonite community and was a social worker before changing careers. Business partners Danielle Goldwyn and Samantha Holloway were psychologists before opening DS Additions in Cherry Creek North. Sara McLaughlin was a neurophysiologist and Mary Alice Malone was an artist before they envisioned A-Line bou- tique in Greenwood Village. We applaud these brave women and thank them for contributing to the growth and diversity of the Front Range retail scene.
